Why I feel the 2nd amendment is still relevant

Why I feel the 2nd amendment is still relevantThis was my response to a fellow defense attorney who questioned why I feel the 2nd Amendment is still relevant, in light of our founding fathers speaking of “a well armed militia, to protect against govt”…
First and foremost “automatic weapons” ARE banned and illegal! Secondly, you may need to study up on the history of countries/civilizations that banned weapons that could stop a govt, foreign or domestic, and what happened to those unarmed citizens? Ie. the holocaust. Thirdly, the evil in this world has risen to a level of terrorism that could never have been imagined by our founding fathers to even comprehend that such evil men will do such evil things to citizens. Last, and most importantly, as an attorney, you defend the Bill of Rights (including the 2nd Amendment) and the U. S. Constitution on a daily basis, do you do this out of passion or just to make money to fill your pockets?

It amazes me that “defense attorneys” fight, and fight hard, against law enforcement officers (the govt) violating people’s “rights” in a Court of Law, but seem to be the first to try and strip others of the same, because they don’t agree with one that doesn’t either fit into their ideology or political party line!

Yes, I am a very strong proponent of the 2nd Amendment, the Right to Bear Arms. But, I fight to protect all of our Rights, not just the ones I “like”. Yes, I believe we would be safer if we were given more rights to arm and protect ourselves and each other. Yes, I firmly believe “open carry” is a better choice than “no carry”. I believe people would be much more respectful and polite to each other, and criminal minds would hesitate more. And yes, I also believe better restrictions could be in place, without banning or criminalizing! I have no problem with higher education, mandatory training, continuing education, and even regulatory fees. But to disarm an entire society for the heinous acts of a few, that is just morally corrupt and disingenuous at the very least. Especially coming from “law makers” and attorneys.

The convicted DUI murderer was picked up at his South 120th Ave house in Wellington, when the bracelet sent a alert showing it had been tampered with. Deputies on the scene advised this was not a false alarm, it appeared obvious the device had been tampered with.

Jupiter Policeman killed in Obama Motorcade

Jupiter Policeman killed in Obama MotorcadeThe Jupiter police department has been at work overnight to pay proper tribute to Bruce St. Laurent, who was killed Sunday when his motorcycle was struck during the presidential motorcade.

A police cruiser draped in black banners and topped with a rose sat in front of the police department Monday morning, paying testament to a 20-year department veteran killed Sunday while helping escort President Barack Obama through Palm Beach County.

They have begun with a web page in the memory of the man who was known by fellow officers for his generosity and recognized in the community as the man who often played Santa Claus for the local Head Start program.

An emotional Jupiter Police Chief Frank Kitzerow declined comment.

“I’m so overwhelmed right now,” Kitzerow said. “Our first priority is notifying (St. Laurent’s) family.”

“Bruce St. Laurent was a valued member of our community and employee within the Town of Jupiter. He was an amazing person who will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.”

“We didn’t lose a co-worker. We lost a friend,” said Sgt. Scott Pascarella, Jupiter police spokesman, who trained St. Laurent when he was a new officer. “He would do anything for anyone.”

Officer Bruce St. Laurent, 55, was traveling with the presidential motorcade around 4:45 p.m. Sunday along Interstate 95 through West Palm Beach when a Ford 150 pickup hit his motorcycle, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Therese Barbera said. Jupiter Police Chief Frank Kitzerow said St. Laurent was transported to nearby St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he died Sunday.

Kitzerow visited St. Laurent’s family Monday morning to discuss funeral services, and memorial information will be made public when it is finalized, Jupiter police spokesman Sgt. Scott Pascarella said Monday. He added that in addition to the squad car memorial in front of the Jupiter police station, radio station 103.1 WIRK Country was there, raising money for St. Laurent’s family. The Jupiter Police Department was working on setting up an account at a local bank to gather money for the slain officer’s family as well, Pascarella said.

The crash that took the 55-year-old father of four happened about 4:40 p.m. on the southbound entrance ramp at 45th Street to Interstate 95. St. Laurent was on his motorcycle as part of the motorcade when he was struck by a white Ford F-150 pickup.

St. Laurent was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Obama Presidential Motorcade

Obama was in West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon for a campaign event at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The president was notified of the accident during the flight from Palm Beach International Airport to Washington, D.C., White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

The driver of the truck also was not immediately identified. Palm Beach County sheriff’s spokesman Eric Davis said Monday that his office and the Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the incident. Barbera said Sunday that authorities were investigating the crash as a vehicular homicide, but she stressed it was still early in the probe.

St. Laurent was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1957, but moved to Jupiter in 1973, and had lived there ever since, according to a memorial statement on the town of Jupiter’s website. He began his decorated career with the Jupiter Police Department in 1992. Three times, most recently in 2008, St. Laurent was named “Officer of the Quarter,” and in 1996, he was selected as “Officer of the Year,” according to the memorial. He was also awarded in 2005 with a Distinguished Service Award by the Traffic Safety Committee of the Palm Beaches.

He was a motorcycle officer for the past 18 years

In 2001, St. Laurent was injured when a vehicle he was chasing westbound on Indiantown Road suddenly stopped and he rammed into the vehicle. Two men in the vehicle were later arrested, one for driving with a revoked license and the other for having an outstanding warrant for reckless driving.

Officers escorted St. Laurent’s body when it was moved from St. Mary’s to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office on Gun Club Road.

Palm Beach Criminal Attorney Cory Strolla

Palm Beach Criminal Attorney Cory Strolla shared the image on his facebook, and had this to say about Office St. Laurent “He was a great guy and a very good officer! Always had a smile..”

Rijkard Jean-Baptiste arrested in connection with Sweet 16 shootout

Rijkard Jean-Baptiste arrested in connection with Sweet 16 shootoutA judge denied bail this morning for a Lake Park man arrested overnight on murder charges related to the fatal shootings of two teens at a Sweet 16 birthday party Saturday in Riviera Beach. The suspected murderer, Rijkard Jean-Baptiste, 20, is rumored to be in a relationship with the granddaughter of Riviera Beach Mayor Rev. Thomas Masters.

Masters denied the allogations, when he spoke with a Palm Beach Post reporter at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte this Thursday morning, where he offered the invocation before the Florida delegation breakfast. “She knows him, but to what extent I don’t know,” Masters said of his granddaughter’s relationship with Jean-Baptiste. “I have seen him a couple times but to know him on a personal basis, I do not, or his family.”

Jean-Baptiste was arrested on first- and second-degree murder charges late last night in connection with the shootings that occured just before midnight during a birthday party at Riviera Beach marina’s Newcomb Hall that left two dead and injured six others.

Jean-Baptiste attended Palm Beach Gardens High School last year but is no longer a student there. It is not known if he gradutated or not.

According to a statement released by Riviera Beach city spokesman William Jiles at 1:21 a.m., he was arrested at his home on Eighth Street in Lake Park. The two victims in this case who were killed when the gun discharged Saturday were a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, but citing an on-going investigation, Riviera Beach police have not released their names.

Police have said two different hand guns were used in the shootings, but they have not indicatecd if another suspect is being sought. Their are two groups involved, hid the guns upon entering the party, but then chose to settle their “dispute” by drawing guns at each other.

The event happened at a casual affair complete with balloons on strings and 100 plus people sitting in groups at round banquet tables, said Rose Anne Brown, the police spokeswoman. An off-duty police officer was in attendance at the party, as required by the city, called in the shooting “right away,” Brown said.

Jean-Baptiste was most recently arrested in June on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm, but has been arrested at least one other time. According to a Riviera Beach probable cause affidavit., the June arrest occured when, Riviera Beach Police were called to 1350 N. Congress Ave. to investigate two men in a Chevy selling guns.

Officers performed a pat down and spoke with Jean-Baptiste and 20-year-old Weisner Geffrard. An officer felt a “hard bulge protruding from his front right pocket” and then saw a small black handgun. Jean-Baptiste told the officer he found the gun at a store at 29th Street and Avenue S while making a delivery. “I just saw the gun and picked it up and put it in my pocket,” he told the officer, according to the affidavit. He did not have a concealed weapon permit.

In April 2011 Jean-Baptiste was arrested at Palm Beach Gardens High School on charges of affray and disorderly conduct. Three students — Jean-Baptiste, Michael Ferguson and Freeman Walker — were fighting each other in the cafeteria in front of about 300 people, according to a Palm Beach County School District Police affidavit.
School employees and police officers separated the three and arrested them.

Despite Saturday night’s shooting, Masters said earlier this week the city has made progress in fighting crime. He says youths have been protected by a curfew he championed that requires minors to be off the streets by 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends.

“Not one young person has been shot at night during the curfew hours,” he said.

Why West Palm Beach DUI Attorneys Are Better Than Court Appointed Attorneys

Why West Palm Beach DUI Attorneys Are Better Than Court Appointed AttorneysA police officer has just told you that you have to go to court for a DUI. You now have two major choices: choose a West Palm Beach DUI attorney from a private firm, or go with a court-appointed attorney. Both have their pros and cons, but the fact is that an attorney from a firm is almost always the better choice. Want to know why? Then keep on reading. This could save you some jail time, or it could save you thousands of dollars.

Less Experience

Every attorney, court-appointed or otherwise, has passed the bar exam in West Palm Beach, and they are all qualified professionals that can represent you during your DUI trial. That being said, the vast majority of court-appointed attorneys have less experience.

Most of them are new graduates that don’t have that much real life experience yet. Not only that, but even those with years of court experience may have never dealt with a DUI case. However, a DUI attorney will have extensive court experience, and he or she specializes in the laws and procedures governing DUI trials.

You Can’t Change the Attorney

Let’s be honest. You could have the best West Palm Beach DUI attorney in the world, but you and the attorney may not get along. If you hired an attorney, then you always have the chance to hire another attorney that will better suit your personality or needs.

That’s not the case with court-appointed attorneys. You better like the attorney that you are given, because you are stuck with him or her. Except in very rare instances, there is no changing the person who is assigned to you.

Less Preparation

DUI attorneys from firms have more time to prepare for your case. This is because they are paid more per hour, and they take on fewer cases. This means that the attorney can really put in the time to research your case for the best results.

Court-appointed attorneys often have double or triple the number of cases, and they just don’t have the time for extensive research. Many even urge clients to make guilty pleas because it can help reduce the sentence, and it takes less time for everyone. At the same time, you can’t submit a guilty plea without agreeing that you are guilty.

Price

The reason why most people go with court-appointed attorneys is because they cost less. However, you really have to weigh that factor. A private attorney can typically do a better job of reducing your fees, so you might actually end up paying less with a private attorney.
